Bezienswaardigheden / tips Monschau 2026:

1) Monschau: Monschau is één van de meest pittoreske stadje in de Duitse Eifel, gelgen in de deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen, vlakbij de Belgische grens. Het staat bekend om zijn vakwerkhuizen, smalle geplaveide straatjes en charmante pleinen. Veel gebouwen stammen uit de 17e en 18e eeuw, toen Monschau een centrum was van de laken en textielindustrie. Gelegen aan de Rur en omgeven door bossen en heuvels van de Eifel maakt het ideaal voor wandelen en natuursport. Monschau trekt toeristen door de combinatie van historische charme, cultureel aanbod en natuurschoon. Het is een ideale bestemming voor zowel een dagtrip als een meerdaags verblijf.

2) Altstadtmarkt (Marktplatz): De Altstadtmarkt (Marktplatz) is het centrale en meest levendige plein van Monschau, waar geschiedenis, cultuur en gezelligheid samenkomen. Het is een belangrijke ontmoetingsplek en een van de mooiste plekken in de oude stad. Ook heeft het meerdere gezellige terrassen waar je kunt zitten, eten en genieten van het uitzicht op het historische plein.

3) Rotes Haus: Het Rotes Haus is een groot, rood (roze) koopmanshuis uit de 18e eeuw. Het werd gebouwd rond 1752 door de rijke familie Scheibler die actief was in de textielindustrie. Het huis is bijna helemaal orgineel bewaard gebleven, je ziet meubels en decoraties uit de 18e eeuw. Bekend is de grote houten trap die door het hele huis loopt. Tegenwoordig is het een museum. Een entree ticket kost 6,00 euro per volwassenen. 

4) Glashütte Monschau: De Glashütte Monschau is een ambachtelijke glasblazerij waar bezoekers live kunnen zien hoe glas met de hand wordt gemaakt. Het is geen fabriek, maar een traditionele werkplaats, attractie en een winkel waar je de mooie glaswerken kunt kopen. Meerdere keren per dag worden er demonstraties gegeven. Je ziet hier verschillende stijlen en technieken. Een bezoek aan de winkel is zeer de moeite waard. 

5) Burg Monschau: Burg Monschau is een middeleeuwse burcht die hoog boven het stadje Monschau in de Duitse Eifel ligt. De burcht werd gebouwd in de 13e eeuw (rond 1217). Het is een zogenoemde heuvelburcht en biedt een prachtig uitzicht over de stad en de rivier de Rur. Tegenwoordig is de burcht grotendeels in gebruik als jeugdherberg. Daarom kun je het gebouw zelf niet volledig van binnen bezoeken. Wat wel toegankelijk is, is de binnenplaats en de uitzichtpunten rondom de burcht. Vanaf het centrum van Monschau kun je de Burg alleen te voet bereiken, het is ongeveer 500 tot 700 meter lang en slechts 10 tot 15 minuten lopen. Het pad is wel vrij steil en loopt deels via trappen zo'n 50 tot 70 meter hoog. Gelukkig is het een korte en mooie wandeling. .  

6) Halle Ruïne: De Haller-Ruine is een oude vestingruïne op de heuvel boven Monschau. Het is een rustige plek met een prachtig uitzicht, maar veel minder bekend dan de burcht. De ruïne is een overblijfsel van een middeleeuwse verdedigingsstelling gebouwd om de stad en omgeving te beschermen. In de loop der tijd is het vervallen en deels verdwenen. Wat je nu ziet zijn resten van muren en fundamenten. Ook de ruïne is alleen te voet te bereiken. Vanaf het centrum is het ongeveer 25 minuten lopen (1 tot 1,5 km) en het pad is steiler dan naar de burcht. Het uitzicht is vaak rustiger en minder sruk dan bij de burcht.

1) Monschau: Monschau is one of the most picturesque towns in the German Eifel, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, close to the Belgian border. Many buildings date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, when Monschau was a center of the cloth and textile industry. Situated on the Rur River and surrounded by the forests and hills of the Eifel, it is ideal for hiking and outdoor sports. Monschau attracts tourists due to the combination of historical charm, cultural offerings, and natural beauty. It is an ideal destination for both a day trip and a multi-day stay.

2) Altstadtmarkt (Marktplatz): The Altstadtmarkt (Marktplatz) is the central and most lively square in Monschau, where history, culture, and conviviality come together. It is an important meeting place and one of the most beautiful spots in the old town. It also features several cozy terraces where you can sit, eat, and enjoy the view of the historic square.

3) Rotes Haus: The Rotes Haus is a large, red (pink) merchant's house from the 18th century. It was built around 1752 by the wealthy Scheibler family, who were active in the textile industry. The house has been preserved almost entirely in its original state; you can see furniture and decorations from the 18th century. The large wooden staircase that runs through the entire house is famous. Today, it is a museum. An entrance ticket costs €6.00 ​​per adult. 

4) Glashütte Monschau: The Glashütte Monschau is an artisanal glassblowing studio where visitors can see live how glass is made by hand. It is not a factory, but a traditional workshop, an attraction, and a shop where you can buy the beautiful glassworks. Demonstrations are given several times a day. You can see various styles and techniques here. A visit to the shop is well worth it. 

5) Burg Monschau: Burg Monschau is a medieval castle situated high above the town of Monschau in the German Eifel. The castle was built in the 13th century (around 1217). It is a so-called hill castle and offers a beautiful view of the town and the River Rur. Nowadays, the castle is largely used as a youth hostel. Therefore, you cannot fully visit the interior of the building itself. What is accessible are the courtyard and the viewpoints around the castle. From the center of Monschau, you can only reach the Burg on foot; it is approximately 500 to 700 meters (1640 - 2296 feet) long and takes only 10 to 15 minutes to walk. The path is quite steep, however, and runs partly via stairs up to a height of about 50 to 70 meters (164 - 229 feet). Fortunately, it is a short and beautiful walk. 

6) Halle Ruïn: The Halle Ruin is an old fortress ruin on the hill above Monschau. It is a quiet spot with a beautiful view, but much less well-known than the castle. The ruin is a remnant of a medieval defensive position built to protect the city and the surrounding area. Over time, it has fallen into disrepair and partially disappeared. What you see now are remains of walls and foundations. The ruin is also only accessible on foot. From the center, it is about a 25-minute walk (1 to 1.5 km or 0,6 to 0,9 miles), and the path is steeper than the one to the castle. The view is often quieter and less crowded than at the castle. 





Rondom Monschau vind je heel veel mooie natuur. Het stadje ligt midden in een van de mooiste natuurgebieden van West-Duitsland (zie film).

Monschau ligt direct aan de rivier de Rur. De rivier stroomt dwars door het historische centrum heen en vormt het hart van het stadje.

De Stadtstrasse is een centrale straat die door een deel van Monschau loopt en het oude centrum verbindt met de toegangswegen. De Stadtstrasse ligt aan de rand van het historische centrum, vanaf hier loop je zo de autovrije oude binnenstad in.

Aan het einde van de Stadtstrasse kom je bij de Rurstrasse en is één van de mooiste en meest karakteristieke straat van Monschau, dit is echt het hart van het historische centrum.

At the end of Stadtstrasse, you reach Rurstrasse, one of the most beautiful and characteristic streets in Monschau, this is truly the heart of the historic center.



Aan deze straat staat de mooie Evangelische Stadtkirche en is de protestantse stadskerk van Monschau. Het is een belangrijk historisch en architectonisch monument in het centrum.

Het gedeelte waar de Evangelische Stadtkirche staat is het meest iconische stukje van Monschau. Hier komen de sprookjesachtige vakwerkhuizen, de Rur en de historische kerktoren samen in één prachtig uitzicht. Vanaf dit punt heb je ook een duidelijk zicht op een oude ruïne die onderdeel was van de verdedigingsstructuren van Monschau. 

The area where the Evangelical City Church stands is the most iconic part of Monschau. Here, the fairytale-like half-timbered houses, the Rur, and the historic church tower come together in one beautiful view. From this point, you also have a clear view of an old ruin that was part of the defensive structures of Monschau.



Rondom het mooie stukje van Monschau zijn veel gezellige restaurants, cafés en diverse eetplekjes. Je kunt er vaak ook direct aan het water of in de rustige straatjes zitten.

Een andere kerk de Aukirche St. Maria Empfängnis ligt direct aan het marktplein (Altstadtmarkt). De marktplein is het gezellige centrale plein van Monschau. Hier vind je vele terrasjes, cafés, restaurants en vaak ook terrasjes met uitzicht op de oude straatjes.

Bij het marktplein vind je de Alte Rur Brücke en is een van de meest iconische bruggen in Monschau. De naam betekent letterlijk de Oude Rurbrug. Vanuit de Alte Rur Brücke heb je een van de mooiste uitzichten op de Rur, de vakwerkhuizen en de kerkachtige torens van het centrum.

At the market square, you will find the Alte Rur Brücke, one of the most iconic bridges in Monschau. The name literally means the Old Rur Bridge. From the Alte Rur Brücke, you have one of the most beautiful views of the Rur, the half-timbered houses, and the church-like towers of the town center.





Over de Alte Rur Brücke ligt de Eschbachstrasse en ligt direct aan de rand van de historische binnenstad en loopt deels langs de rivier de Rur. Je vindt er veel vakwerkhuizen uit de 17e en 18e eeuw. De straat volgt de rivier wat zorgt voor schilderachtige uitzichten. (zie film).

The Eschbachstrasse spans the Alte Rur Brücke and lies directly on the edge of the historic city center, and runs partly along the River Rur. You will find many half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries there. The street follows the river, creating picturesque views. (see film).





In de Laufenstrasse staat het huis Troistorff, een barok stadspaleis (patriciërshuis) uit de 18e eeuw. Het werd gebouwd als woonhuis van een rijke textielfabrikant. Monschau was toen een belangrijk centrum voor de laken en textielindustrie. Tegenwoordig is het een officiële trouwlocatie. Voor het huis staat een kunstwerk de Hochzeitsbaum en is hier geplaatst omdat hier veel huwelijke plaatsvinden. De boom hoort bij deze plek omdat bruidsparen die hier trouwen hun namen op het kunstwerk laten vereeuwigen.

On Laufenstrasse stands the Troistorff House, a Baroque city palace (patrician house) from the 18th century. It was built as the residence of a wealthy textile manufacturer. At that time, Monschau was an important center for the cloth and textile industry. Nowadays, it is an official wedding venue. In front of the house stands a work of art called the Hochzeitsbaum (Wedding Tree), which was placed because many weddings take place here. The tree belongs to this place because couples who get married here have their names immortalized on the artwork.





Wat verder in de Laufenstrasse staat de Stiftung Scheibler Museum Rotes Haus (pand in het roze) en is een museum en cultureel erfgoedmonument. Het museum is gewijd aan het rijke culturele en economische verleden van Monschau, vooral de lakenindustrie uit de 18e en 19e eeuw.

Further down Laufenstrasse stands the Stiftung Scheibler Museum Rotes Haus (building in pink), which is a museum and cultural heritage monument. The museum is dedicated to the rich cultural and economic past of Monschau, particularly the cloth industry of the 18th and 19th centuries.





Het prettige aan Monschau is dat auto's beperkt zijn in het centrum waardoor het stadje rustig en toeristisch aantrekkelijk is.

The nice thing about Monschau is that cars are limited in the center, making the town quiet and attractive to tourists.





Vlakbij het grote parkeerdek Burgau staat de Glashütte Monschau, dit is een bijzondere plek in Monschau waar je het traditionele ambacht van glasblazen van dichtbij kunt zien.

Located near the large Burgau parking deck is the Monschau Glassworks, a special place in Monschau where you can see the traditional craft of glassblowing up close.





De Glashütte is een glasblazerij en werkplaats waar ambachtslieden met de hand glas maken. Het is ook een winkel waar al het glas wordt tentoongesteld. Je kunt er dus niet alleen kijken maar ook glaswerken kopen.

The Glashütte is a glassblowing factory and workshop where artisans make glass by hand. It is also a shop where all the glass is on display. So you can not only look there but also buy glassworks.
