Bezienswaardigheden / tips 2026:

1) Baleal: Baleal is een klein eiland gelegen 3 kilometer ten noorden van Peniche, gescheiden van het vasteland door een tombolo. Baleal heeft een verleden dat verband houdt met de walvisvangst. Op dit kleine eiland werden walvissen geknipt en gesneden op hun trekroute naar de noordelijk zeeën. Vandaag de dag is Baleal een surfers paradijs. Het strand is breed met hoge golven. Ideaal voor de surfer maar ook voor zonaanbidders. De baai is ideaal voor beginners en gevorderden. Ook is het strand ideaal voor jongere gezinnen met kleinere kinderen omdat de zee aan de andere kant iets rustiger is. 

 2) Parkeren: Ondanks er voldoende parkeergelegenheid is kan het in het hoogseizoen en in de weekenden behoorlijk druk zijn. De kans op een parkeerplek is dan erg klein tenzij je heel vroeg bent. Er is ook een grote parkeerplaats op het eiland Iiha do Baleal (het kleine dorpje) voorbij de tombolo. Als je over de zandverbinding rijdt ga je meteen naar links en kom je op de parkeerplaats terecht. De meeste mensen parkeren hun auto direct aan het strand voor de tombolo, deze parkeerplaats op Iiha do Baleal zou dan een optie kunnen zijn. In het hoogseizoen is het dus raadzaam om Baleal te voet met het OV of taxi te bezoeken.

3) Voorzieningen: Er zijn genoeg voorzieningen bij het strand, er zijn parasols, toiletten, kleedkamers en tijdens het zomerseizoen is er ook een life guard aanwezig.

Highlights / tips 2026:

1) Baleal: Baleal is a small island located 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) north of Peniche, separated from the mainland by a sandy connection. Baleal has a history linked to whaling. On this small island, whales were cut and chopped on their migration route to the northern seas. Today Baleal is a surfers paradise. The beach is wide with high waves. Ideal for surfers but also for sunbathers. The bay is ideal for beginners and experts. The beach is also ideal for younger families with smaller children because the sea on the other side is slightly calmer. 

2) Parking: Although there is enough parking, it can be quite busy during the high season and on weekends. The chance of finding a parking space is then very small unless you arrive very early. There is also a large car park on the island of Iiha do Baleal (the small village) beyond the sandy connection. When you drive over the sand connection, immediately turn left and you will arrive at the parking lot. Most people park their car directly on the beach for the sandy connection, so this parking lot at Iiha do Baleal could be an option. In the high season it is therefore advisable to visit Baleal on foot by public transport or by taxi.  

3) Facilities: There are plenty of facilities at the beach, there are parasols, toilets, changing rooms and during the summer season there is also a life guard on duty.

De stranden zijn schitterend, aan de andere kant van dit prachtige strand is het water wat rustiger en ideaal voor gezinnen met kleine kinderen.

The beaches are beautiful, on the other side of this beautiful beach the water is a bit calmer and ideal for families with small childeren.





                            Er zijn voldoende gezellige kleine restaurantjes waar je heerlijk kunt relaxen en eten.

Hoewel het eiland Baleal via een zandverbinding met het vasteland van Portugal is verbonden, is het nog steeds een eiland. De zandverbinding ontstond op natuurlijke wijze rond de 15e en 16e eeuw toen de baai verstopt raakte door slib.

De naam van het eiland komt van 'Baleia' het Portugese woord voor walvis. Zoals veel plaatsen in Portugal was dit gebied een essentieel onderdeel van de walvisindustrie.

In de middeleeuwen werden walvissen naar Baleal gebracht om te worden geslacht. De zandverbinding tussen het vasteland en het eiland was ook de reden waarom de walvisjacht gelukkig stopte omdat de walvisschepen de baai niet meer konden binnenvaren (zie film). 

In the Middle Ages, whales were brought to Baleal to be slaughtered. The sand connection between the mainland and the island was also the reason why whaling fortunately stopped because the whale ships could no longer enter the bay (see film). 





De walvissen komen helaas niet meer in dit gebied voor, maar het eiland zelf is nog steeds prachtig zoals het is en het is een van de beste plekken om na het surfen naar magische zonsondergangen te kijken.

Unfortunately, the whales are no longer in this area, but the island itself is still beautiful as it is and it is one of the best places to watch magical sunsets after surfing.
