Bezienswaardigheden / tips British Normandy Memorial 2026:

1) British Normandy Memorial: Het British Normandy Memorial is een herdenkingsmonument in Ver-sur-Mer. Het herdenkt de 22.442 Britse en Britse commandotroepen die tijdens D-Day (6 juni 1944) en de Slag om Normandië (tot 31 augustus 1944) zijn gesneuveld. Hun namen zijn gegraveerd in 160 witte pilaren, gerangschikt op datum van overlijden. Het is het enigste monument in Normandië waar alle namen bij elkaar staan op locatie van de Britse landingssectie "Gold Beach". Vanaf het monument heb je een panoramisch uitzicht over de zee en de stranden, waardoor bezoekers letterlijk uitkijken over de plek waar de geschiedenis plaatsvond. Vlaggen en informatiepanelen verwijzen ook naar andere landingsstranden zoals Omaha en Utah Beach, om de gezamelijke geallieerde inzet te tonen. Het memorial werd geopend op 6 juni 2021 en vormt een centrale plaats van herdenking, bezinning en educatie over de Britse rol in de bevrijding van Europa. De toegang tot het monument is gratis.

2) Winston Churchill Centre: Het Winston Churchill Centre is een nieuw educatief en herdenkingscentrum op het terrein van het Britse Normandië monument. Het is officieel geopend op 6 juni 2024 door Koning Charles III en Koningin Camilla ter gelegenheid van de 80-ste verjaardag van D-Day. Dit centrum is bedoeld om de verhalen, waarden en erfgoed van de bevrijders van de Tweede Wereldoorlog levend te houden voor toekomstige generaties. Ook is er een Café en winkel waar je snacks, drankjes en souvenirs kunt kopen. De toegang is gratis. 
 
3) Parkeren: Parkeren bij het monument is niet gratis. Voor personenauto's kost het ongeveer 3,50 euro per dag. De opbrengst van het parkeren gaat naar het onderhoud van het monument en terrein.

1) British Normandy Memorial: The British Normandy Memorial is a memorial in Ver-sur-Mer. It commemorates the 22,442 British and British Special Forces troops who fell during D-Day (June 6, 1944) and the Battle of Normandy (until August 31, 1944). Their names are engraved on 160 white pillars, arranged by date of death. It is the only memorial in Normandy where all the names of the British landing section "Gold Beach" are listed together. From the monument, there is a panoramic view of the sea and the beaches, allowing visitors to literally look out over the place where history took place. 2) Winston Churchill Centre: The Winston Churchill Centre is a new educational and memorial centre on the site of the British Normandy Memorial. It was officially opened on 6 June 2024 by King Charles III and Queen Camilla to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This center aims to keep the stories, values and heritage of the liberators of World War II alive for future generations. There is also a café and shop selling snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. Admission is free.

3) Parking: Parking at the monument is not free. Passenger cars pay approximately €3.50 per day. Parking revenue goes toward the maintenance of the monument and its grounds.

                              

Vanaf de parkeerplaats bij het British Normandy Memorial moet je ongeveer 8 tot 10 minuten lopen over een grindpad om bij het eigenlijke monument te komen. Langs dit wandelpad zijn een aantal stenen geplaatst waarop delen van het verhaal van de landingen en de Slag om Normandië zijn uitgebeeld of tekstuele uitleg geeft. De stenen zijn bedoeld als interpretatieve panelen: je leert wat er op deze plaats is gebeurd en waarom deze plek zo belangrijk is in de context van D-Day en de daaropvolgenden gevechten.

From the parking lot at the British Normandy Memorial, you have to walk about 8 to 10 minutes on a gravel path to reach the actual monument. Along this walking path, several stones have been placed depicting or providing textual explanations of parts of the story of the landings and the Battle of Normandy. The stones are intended as interpretive panels: you learn what happened at this location and why it is so important in the context of D-Day and the subsequent fighting. 





Het ontwerp van het terrein is bewust landschappelijk en open gehouden. De bomen zijn relatief jong (het memorial werd geopend in 2021) en creëren een stille, beschutte sfeer. De wandeling door het groen bereidt bezoekers mentaal voor op het monument. De architecten wilden geen zwaar of somber militair complex, maar een waardige, serene herdenkingsplek.

The design of the site has been deliberately kept landscaped and open. The trees are relatively young (the memorial opened in 2021) and create a quiet, sheltered atmosphere. The walk through the greenery mentally prepares visitors for the monument. The architects did not want a heavy or somber military complex, but a dignified, serene place of remembrance.





Standing with Giants is een tijdelijke kunst-herdenkingsinstallatie bestaande uit honderden levensgrote silhouetfiguren van soldaten en ander militair personeel. Deze figuren zijn geplaatst in het grasveld rond het Memorial, meestal gericht naar de zee (Gold Beach), op de locatie waar Britse troepen op D-Day, 6 juni 1944, landden en hun offers brachten.

Standing with Giants is a temporary art memorial installation consisting of hundreds of life-size silhouettes of soldiers and other military personnel. These figures are positioned in the grassy area surrounding the memorial, mostly facing the sea (Gold Beach), at the location where British troops landed and made their sacrifices on D-Day, June 6, 1944.





Elk silhouet staat symbool voor een leven dat verloren ging op D-Day. De naam Standing with Giants refereert aan de enorme schaal van het offer en het respect voor de gesneuvelden. De installatie is niet permanent aanwezig, zij wordt elk jaar voor een beperkte periode geplaatst, vooral tijdens het lente en zomerseizoen.

Each silhouette symbolizes a life lost on D-Day. The name Standing with Giants refers to the enormous scale of the sacrifice and the respect for the fallen. The installation is not permanent, it is placed each year for a limited period, mainly during the spring and summer season.

Rond het centrale "D-Day - The Landings" monument staan 160 witte pilaren (zuilen) waarin de namen van de Britse en Commonwealth soldaten zijn gegraveerd die zijn omgekomen tijdens de Slag om Normandië 1944.

Het standbeeld toont drie Britse soldaten die de kust op stormen tijdens D-Day, 6 juni 1944. Ze zijn afgebeeld in de momenten van de landing, compleet met uitrusting en wapens, terwijl ze uit hun landingsvaartuig stappen en de branding ingaan (zie film).

The statue depicts three British soldiers storming the coast on D-Day, June 6, 1944. They are depicted in the moments of landing, complete with equipment and weapons, as they step out of their landing craft and enter the surf (see film).





Het monument ligt op een heuvel in Ver-sur-Mer, direct boven Gold Beach, het strand waar de Britse troepen op D-Day landden. Vanaf de centrale plaquette en het beeld van de drie soldaten kijk je letterlijk uit over het zand en de zee waar duizenden soldaten hun aanval begonnen.

The monument is located on a hill in Ver-sur-Mer, directly above Gold Beach, the beach where British troops landed on D-Day. From the central plaque and the statue of the three soldiers, you can literally look out over the sand and sea where thousands of soldiers launched their attack.



Je kunt het hele landingsgebied zien, inclusief de plek waar de tijdelijke Mulberry haven van de geallieerden werd aangelegd bij Arromanches.

You can see the entire landing area, including the site where the Allied temporary Mulberry harbour was built at Arromanches.



De vlag markeert Gold Beach, ook zijn twee verpleegkundigen afgebeeld. Ze symboliseren de medische zorg en steun tijdens de landingen, veel gevonden werden door deze verpleegkundigen op het strand en achter de linies verzorgd. 

The flag marks Gold Beach and also depicts two nurses. They symbolize the medical care and support provided during the landings. Many of the victims were cared for by these nurses on the beach and behind the lines.





Ook staan er vlaggen of borden die de andere stranden van de D-Day landingen aangeven: Omaha en Utah Beach. Het benadrukt internationale samenwerking tijdens de invasie van Normandië. Het herinnert bezoekers eraan dat de bevrijding van Europa een massale, gecoördineerde operatie was van vele landen (zie film).
